Working with Pregnancy, Postpartum, Hormones and Injuries

The last couple of months have been a little out of the ordinary for me as I've been dealing with some challenges:

One - My chronic, mild knee pain turned into turned into swollen, severe knee pain.

Two - One of my cats passed away unexpectedly.

When we're dealing with big changes like injuries, big emotions, hormonal changes, pregnancy, postpartum etc, there are 2 ways we can handle them:

We can work WITH them, and we can work AROUND them.

Working WITH something means that we're addressing it and spending time taking care of that specific thing. Like this…

  • With my knee injury, I saw a physiotherapist who helped me clear up the pain and swelling.

  • The first week after losing my cat, I was looking for distractions to help me cope, so pushing in the gym felt surprisingly good. I also made an appointment to see my counsellor.

  • When a postnatal client started experiencing pain in her shoulder blade, we started including specific shoulder and upper back exercises in our sessions to manage and clear up her pain.

Working AROUND something means that we're adapting to the situation and finding ways to still continue with our fitness, even if it looks different or we have to avoid some things. Like this…

  • While I was working with the physiotherapist on my knee injury, I spent that month literally only doing upper body workouts to avoid aggravating my knee (not gonna lie, it was pretty fun😜). So I still got my workouts done, I just didn't involve the knee!

  • The second week after my losing my cat, the grief got into my body and my energy dropped significantly, so (for now) I've shortened my workouts so I can still get some movement in. We'll see how that goes!

  • When a pregnant client started feeling uncomfortable lying on her back, we avoided that position going forward, and we switched to keeping her in standing, seated or incline positions.

Sometimes a situation might need you to work with it, around it or both. But the idea behind having these options is to give us the opportunity to continue being active in some way, while also giving us the grace and freedom to take care of ourselves physically, mentally and emotionally.
