4 Tips to add cardio into your fitness routine

Fall is here, and with a turn to colder weather on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to talk about CARDIO.

Cardio (aerobic exercise) is a wonderful and core component of building health and longevity. Just like strength training can make us feel powerful, regular cardio in your exercise program boosts that unstoppable feeling. Improved heart health and circulation will help you hike, bike, escape fascism, and go up your stairs for the 100th time today. It will also boost your sleep quality and immune function. Pretty much covers all bases. Read more about all the benefits here.

Here are 4 quick tips to help you make cardio part of your busy and active lifestyle:

  1. Start with 10 minutes a week, working up to two 20-minute sessions once it feels doable - replace one drive, bike to the store, walk/run home from school drop-off, or get a few laps in during the weekly family swim. The goal is to reach a constant, sustained effort for the session where you can have a conversation with some light huffing and puffing throughout.

  2. Add weight or incline - If you’re already a walker, maximize the time you have by making things a little harder. While a weighted vest doesn’t actually help with bone density (sorry peri/meno ladies!), it can increase your workout intensity so your daily walk becomes more of a cardio session. Another option is to head for the hills or pop an incline on your treadmill or walking pad.

  3. Make it whimsical - a 10-minute family dance party (while carrying a toddler!), do some random parkour on your run, or turn up a playlist that makes you feel like you belong in a Britney music video. Dedicated cardio time is perfect for main character energy.

  4. Tell your friends - this is a great one to share on socials: a screenshot of your health tracker, a sweaty selfie, a beautiful view. Tag me (@coachdee_fitness) and you’ll have a guaranteed fan.
